Options Market Sees Big Bullish Bet on Bitcoin Surging Past $82,000

After Bitcoin reclaimed the $80,000 level, a notable large bullish trade has emerged in the options market.

One or more traders purchased 2,000 Bitcoin call option contracts on Monday, with a strike price of $82,000 and a September 4 expiry, paying roughly $2.9 million in total premiums. The trade indicates investors are betting the spot price of Bitcoin will break above $82,000 before the expiry date. Options instruments function similarly to lottery tickets—the buyer pays a relatively small upfront cost, and if the bet succeeds, they can reap higher returns. Should Bitcoin fail to close above $82,000 at expiry, the buyer would lose the entire premium of $2.9 million.

Bitcoin's recent rally has been swift, climbing about 25% from around $64,000 to near $80,000 within a single week. Market analysis suggests this upswing is driven by multiple factors, including liquidity expectations from the U.S. Treasury's bond buyback policy, sustained inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, and short covering that has accelerated the upward momentum.

Despite active call options trading, institutional investors remain cautious overall. Data shows that Deribit's 7-day Bitcoin skew indicator—which reflects the volatility premium difference between calls and puts—has turned from positive to negative, indicating robust demand for downside protection. Ethereum's 7-day skew has also shown a significant negative reading.

Analysts point out that following such a violent rally, the market is actively buying tail-risk protection, reflecting pricing for multiple macroeconomic event risks in the latter half of the week, rather than mere panic over price movements. Even with Bitcoin above $80,000, the negative skew suggests market participants' demand for downside hedging has not waned.
