Post-AI Alarm Market Turmoil, Cybersecurity Stocks Including CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Set for Sharp Weekly Gains

A week filled with risk warnings for humanity turned out to be a profitable one for cybersecurity investors. Following a series of risk alerts from leading AI industry players, top cybersecurity firms like Okta, CrowdStrike, and Palo Alto Networks saw their stock prices surge significantly this week.

Despite a pullback in the sector on Friday, data shows that since Monday, CrowdStrike has led the gains with a cumulative rise of 14%; SailPoint is up 13%; Palo Alto Networks has climbed 8%, and Okta has gained 10%. The First Trust Nasdaq Cybersecurity ETF (CIBR) advanced 5% over the week.

This rally likely reflects market expectations that companies will increase investment in infrastructure protection, which could further accelerate the business growth of cybersecurity firms. In an interview, Okta's co-founder and CEO, Todd McKinnon, stated, "Threat actors are also using large language models; they are not slowing down and are eyeing various targets. Attackers know that a lot of business now relies on AI, so they want to find exploitable vulnerabilities. Our phones are ringing off the hook right now. Every company understands they must manage all identity and access permissions."

This week, warnings from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about the powerful AI technologies they have developed and built triggered a stir within the tech community. In a September 12 blog post, Amodei wrote, "Over the past few months, I have become increasingly convinced that to adequately mitigate risks, we need to be more prudent. This involves not only investing resources in risk prevention but also controlling the pace of AI capability iteration, giving risk mitigation time to catch up. We must slow down the pace of AI model capability upgrades. Overall progress will remain rapid, and we need to make good use of the buffer time we secure."

Following the post, Altman expressed agreement with his competitor's viewpoints. Subsequently, on Monday, he published a more somber post on platform X. At the Dreamforce software conference, Salesforce's co-founder and CEO, Marc Benioff, also weighed in on the AI debate, stating that AI industry leaders must take responsibility for addressing current security challenges. Speaking live from the Dreamforce event in San Francisco, Benioff told Yahoo Finance, "What social media companies have done over the past decade has deeply disappointed us all. We have seen countless teenagers harmed and countries impacted by the narratives on social media. We must not let AI become social media 2.0."
