In a recent interview, when asked why all his products start with the letter M, Ji Yichao, co-founder and chief scientist of Manus, stated that it was entirely a coincidence, adding that "perhaps products starting with M tend to have pretty good luck." He mentioned that his first product was the Mammoth browser, starting with M, the second product was called Magi, also starting with M, the third product was Monica, again starting with M, and Manus likewise begins with M. He specifically pointed out that for Manus, there might have been a bit of personal bias, as he was the one who chose the name. He explained that they debated many names initially, but eventually reached a crucial realization about "what we truly should be doing." "Back when we were developing the browser, we already had an inkling that models are tackling intelligence. However, no matter how powerful an intelligence is, it cannot internalize the environment; it absolutely requires a 'hand' to interact with the real world. Otherwise, even the most advanced thinking remains just a theoretical physicist, or, you could even say, a 'brain in a vat.' This reminded me of MIT's motto, 'Mens Et Manus,' which is Latin, translating to 'Mind and Hand' or the union of mind and hand." Ji Yichao discussed how others have already ventured far in exploring the mind, which is the mission of all foundational model companies, whereas their goal is actually to be that 'hand.' He noted that Manus means 'hand' in Latin.
