China’s wind and solar power capacity has historically overtaken coal-fired power during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, with the country also leading the world in nuclear and bioenergy sectors, according to the newly released 2026 Energy Industry Ecological Report.

Released today (25th), the report from the China Enterprise Reform and Development Society shows that the nation’s energy industry achieved a dual, coordinated development of secure supply and green, low-carbon transformation during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). In 2025, total investment in key national energy projects exceeded 3.5 trillion yuan for the first time, representing a year-on-year increase of nearly 11%. The new energy sector experienced leapfrog development, with combined wind and solar installed capacity surging from 530 gigawatts in 2020 to 1.84 terawatts in 2025. China’s total installed nuclear power capacity remains the largest in the world, and its bioenergy power generation has held the top global ranking for seven consecutive years.
