UK June Vehicle Registrations Climb, Electric Cars Capture Nearly 30% Market Share

Deep News

Data released on Friday by New AutoMotive indicates that new car registrations in the UK for June increased by 15% compared to the same period last year, a rise attributed in part to higher fuel prices boosting demand for electric vehicles. Battery electric vehicles accounted for nearly 30% of the market share.

Electric Vehicle Market Share Growth

The industry body noted that thanks to government subsidies and the introduction of more lower-cost models, pure electric vehicles made up nearly one-third of new car registrations in June. This represents the best monthly performance outside of seasonal peak periods.

Shifting Consumer Preferences

As fuel costs rise—primarily due to global oil market shocks stemming from the conflict in Iran—consumers are increasingly turning to alternative energy sources, leading to an expanding market share for electric vehicles across Europe.

Industry Perspective on Adoption

"Electric vehicles are entering the mainstream because their advantages are clear: many new models are now priced comparably to petrol and diesel cars, while used electric vehicles are often even more affordable," said Gurjeet Grewal, Chief Executive of Octopus Electric Vehicles.

Regulatory Pressures on Manufacturers

Automakers are under pressure to meet the UK's zero-emission vehicle mandate, which sets annual targets for the proportion of electric vehicles in new car sales. This pressure is intensified by stricter EU trade rules set to take effect in 2027.

Post-Brexit Trade Concerns

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has warned that UK electric vehicle manufacturers could face tariffs of up to £1.4 billion starting in January if the UK and EU fail to reach an agreement on post-Brexit rules of origin requirements.

Export Market Dynamics

The EU remains the largest export market for UK-produced vehicles.

Year-to-Date Performance vs. Target

According to New AutoMotive data, battery electric vehicles have accounted for 24.9% of total new car registrations in the UK so far this year. This figure remains below the government's target of 33%.

June Registration Figures

Total new car registrations in the UK for June reached 215,921 units. Within this total, registrations of pure electric vehicles grew by 38% to reach 64,440 units.

Key Manufacturer Performance

In June, Tesla Inc registered 12,403 pure electric vehicles, a 42% increase year-on-year, signaling a gradual recovery for the automaker in the European market. BYD Company Limited registered 2,999 vehicles, representing a 9% increase compared to the previous year.
