Trump Reveals CFTC Push for Hyperliquid's US Market Entry, Sending HYPE Token Up 11%

During a White House meeting on Wednesday with executives from the crypto and tech sectors, President Donald Trump disclosed that Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Mike Selig is actively working to bring the decentralized perpetual contract trading platform Hyperliquid into the US market in a fully compliant manner. The announcement provided a significant boost to market sentiment, with Hyperliquid's native token, HYPE, surging 11% during the day's trading session.

Trump noted during the meeting that Selig is working "very hard" on this initiative. The White House gathering brought together a host of prominent crypto industry leaders, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev. Additionally, the heads of Nasdaq and Intercontinental Exchange were also in attendance at the meeting.

Hyperliquid operates as a blockchain-based trading venue, primarily recognized for its perpetual futures contracts. These instruments enable traders to speculate on price movements without the need to hold the underlying asset. Unlike traditional futures, these contracts do not have an expiration date. Users access the platform by connecting their crypto wallets directly, bypassing the conventional route of opening accounts through traditional futures brokers.

The rapid growth of Hyperliquid has brought increased attention to the perpetual contract market, a space historically dominated by offshore crypto exchanges. This expansion has also sparked interest among US-based trading venues. The CFTC previously approved Coinbase Derivatives to launch perpetual-style bitcoin and ether futures in April 2025, with trading commencing in July of that year. Prediction market operator Kalshi has also received approval to offer similar products. Since then, more US trading venues have entered this arena, providing American investors with a broader array of trading options.

However, introducing Hyperliquid itself into the US presents a more complex set of challenges. US derivatives exchanges are subject to strict regulations covering registration, customer protection, and market oversight. These requirements have historically made it difficult for many crypto platforms to serve US clients directly. Trump did not elaborate on the specific structure of a potential onshore version of Hyperliquid or detail the regulatory approvals it would require. His comments also do not signify that regulators have officially sanctioned the exchange. Nevertheless, the remarks indicate that the CFTC is actively exploring whether leading perpetual contract platforms in the crypto market can operate legally within the US regulatory framework.
