Over 80% of New Cloud Providers Will Be Eliminated: A CoreWeave Default Would Be a Disaster for the Industry

The AI compute rental industry is facing a severe valuation reset. Credit markets are pricing in a steadily rising risk of default by CoreWeave, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRWV), and prominent research firm Gartner has warned that more than 80% of emerging cloud service providers, known as neoclouds, will be unable to survive independently before 2030.

CoreWeave closed down 15.5% on Wednesday at $65.78, after falling as much as 17% intraday, marking its largest single-day drop since going public. The company's five-year credit default swap (CDS) spread widened by 135 basis points to a record high of 1,117 basis points, implying roughly a 63% probability of default within five years. Chief Executive Officer Michael Intrator blamed the market reaction on a "misjudgment" in an internal memo, saying the company is fully confident in its business model yet after the memo was sent, the CDS spread only widened further to the aforementioned record level.

Gartner's report has added another variable to an already turbulent market. The firm estimates that by 2030, assets facing impairment risk in the AI infrastructure industry will exceed $3.5 trillion, and it predicts the industry as a whole will not reach the 12% minimum return threshold until the end of 2032.

Gartner Warns: Eight in Ten Emerging Cloud Providers Will Be Eliminated

In a report released Wednesday, Gartner stated that by 2030, cost pressures and a lack of differentiated business models will force more than 80% of neocloud providers to cease independent operations 鈥?meaning four out of every five companies renting Nvidia GPUs will be acquired or exit the market outright.

Gartner expects AI service providers to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure in 2026 alone, with roughly another $6 trillion invested between 2027 and 2030. However, the revenue the industry is expected to generate is far below the level needed to support investment of this scale, leaving a gap of approximately $4.9 trillion between the two.

Gartner also predicts that because most AI-native companies adopt asset-light models, "less than half of AI revenue will flow to providers with significant AI infrastructure."

Specifically for the AI-optimized Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) segment where neoclouds operate, its market size is projected to grow from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030 鈥?a scale that Gartner believes remains "insufficient to recoup investment" for most AI compute providers before existing chips are replaced by a newer generation.

It is worth noting that in June this year, Gartner predicted neoclouds would hold a 20% share of the $267 billion AI cloud market in 2030. The two forecasts are not contradictory: the market pie has grown larger, but the number of players who can get a slice will shrink dramatically.

The Scissors Gap Between Overspending and Returns: A Structural Dilemma for the Industry

The financial condition of CoreWeave clearly illustrates the structural contradiction facing the entire industry.

As of the end of June, the company's total debt stood at approximately $52 billion, up sharply from about $15 billion a year earlier. Second-quarter interest expense jumped to $640 million from $267 million, accounting for roughly a quarter of the quarter's $2.58 billion in revenue, while the net loss for the period reached $626 million.

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria summed up the problem in one sentence: CoreWeave borrows at a cost of about 9%, while its return on investment is only about 1%. He warned that once the AI spending boom cools, "equity value will go to zero."

Goldman Sachs reached a similar conclusion: the compute investment by six major U.S. technology spenders in 2026 and 2027 will need to generate roughly $1.4 trillion in revenue between 2028 and 2030 just to recoup costs 鈥?equivalent to about $11.6 billion per gigawatt per year. The revenue scale promised by the industry is several times what current end demand can actually absorb.

Credit Market Alarm: Spreading From CoreWeave, Inc. to the Entire Industry

The alarm bells in the credit market rang earlier than in the stock market.

The yield on CoreWeave's $1.25 billion unsecured bond maturing in 2032 hit 15% on Tuesday, then widened further on Wednesday, with its CDS spread reaching a record high of 1,117 basis points.

The stress has spread to the broader AI financing ecosystem. According to a report from Goldman Sachs' cross-asset team, in a single trading day, macro credit spreads saw their largest expansion in months: Oracle CDS spreads widened by 31 basis points, hyperscaler cash bond spreads widened by 4 to 5 basis points, data center bond spreads widened by 7 basis points, and high-yield AI data center bonds showed a high degree of correlation with CoreWeave.

The Bottom Line: Consolidation May Already Be the Most Optimistic Scenario

Sell-side institutions may interpret Gartner's 80% elimination forecast as a positive signal for industry consolidation 鈥?the strong absorbing the weak, survivors acquiring GPUs at a discount, and the AI buildout continuing to advance.

That is one possible path. However, with the CDS market having already priced in more than a 60% probability of default within five years for this industry flagship, the more likely path is that consolidation arrives in the form of asset impairments, distressed exchanges, and restructuring advisors knocking on the door. The $3.5 trillion impairment risk forecast by Gartner may materialize sooner than expected.

JPMorgan's market intelligence team maintained a "tactically bullish" stance on the semiconductor sector on Wednesday, citing "potential opportunities to buy the dip," but at the same time listed "AI-related credit events" and "spread widening" as current major risks, one of which already came true that day. The financing logic of the AI industry is undergoing the market's most rigorous stress test.
