Alibaba Cloud is significantly accelerating the construction timeline and reducing expenses for AI data centers through its proprietary modular architecture, as it intensifies its global rollout in the AI infrastructure race.

According to reports, Alibaba Cloud has leveraged its self-developed CUBE 5.0 modular system to slash the delivery cycle of large-scale AI data centers to just 100 days, while also lowering construction costs by 10%. In comparison, traditional data center delivery in China typically takes 6 to 12 months, while the U.S. market requires 12 to 18 months.

Alibaba Cloud also anticipates that the production efficiency of its modular data centers will more than double this year, measured by the number of modular units delivered per unit of time. This progress comes on the heels of Alibaba's announcement of a 380 billion yuan (approximately $56.3 billion) AI capital expenditure plan, signaling an accelerated expansion pace in global AI infrastructure.

CUBE 5.0: Modularization Rate Jumps from 30% to 90%

Launched in 2024, the core breakthrough of CUBE 5.0 lies in its substantial increase in the modularization of key systems. The architecture covers five core systems: power supply, cooling, security, intelligent management, and fire protection. The overall modularization rate has been elevated from 30% in the previous version to 90% in the latest iteration.

Unlike traditional construction methods, which require sequential on-site installation of power, cooling, and IT systems, the modular data center approach breaks down infrastructure into independent components. These components are prefabricated simultaneously in factories and then shipped to the site as containerized units, assembled like building blocks. This parallel production model is key to the drastic reduction in the delivery timeline.

Domestic Pilots Deployed, Overseas Certifications Underway

The CUBE 5.0 architecture has been deployed in pilot projects in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, and Zhongwei, Ningxia. Concurrently, it has obtained certifications for promotion in European and Southeast Asian markets, providing technical support for Alibaba Cloud's overseas expansion.

In its latest international move, Alibaba has launched its first data centers in France, further expanding its global business footprint. This aligns with its previously announced massive AI capital expenditure plan, underscoring the company's strategic intent to accelerate deployments in global markets.

Global Tech Giants Race to Adopt Modular Approaches

Alibaba Cloud is not the only tech company betting on modular data centers. In the United States, Google has explored the concept of modular data centers early on. Both Microsoft and Meta Platforms are also adopting prefabricated modules to expand their cloud computing and AI infrastructures, aiming to surpass the speed limitations of traditional construction methods.

As global AI demand continues to surge, the ability to scale rapidly is becoming a core competitive factor for tech companies vying for dominance in AI infrastructure.
