AI Spending Fears Fade as Memory Chip Stocks Rally, Boosting Semiconductor Index Back Into Bull Territory

Memory chip shares are staging a powerful comeback. Strong financial disclosures from AI frontier model companies Anthropic and OpenAI have bolstered confidence in the sustainability of AI hardware demand.

On Monday, Micron Technology shares climbed 4.1%, extending a five-session winning streak that totals a 17.5% gain, the longest run of consecutive advances since January of this year. SanDisk Corp. shares surged 8.9% in a single session, while Western Digital and Seagate Technology PLC added 5.4% and 2.2%, respectively.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) closed 1.6% higher at 12,621 points, rebounding more than 20% from its July 29 trough and officially re-entering a technical bull market. The preceding bear phase lasted just 21 days, marking the shortest downturn since March 2020.

AI Revenue Acceleration Validates Chip Demand Outlook

A key catalyst behind this rally is the consistently strong financial performance from AI frontier model developers. Anthropic posted preliminary second-quarter revenue exceeding $11.5 billion, compared with just $787 million in the same period last year.

Jordan Klein, a trading desk analyst at Mizuho, noted in a client report that the "positive financial updates" from Anthropic and OpenAI represent the most important near-term catalyst for chip stocks, as both companies accelerate their efforts toward potential IPOs.

CNBC reported on Friday that OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told investors that enterprise business revenue now exceeds consumer revenue, with annualized revenue run-rate reaching $40 billion.

Klein indicated that market consensus for Anthropic's full-year recurring revenue sits between $75 billion and $100 billion, with some reports suggesting that figure could climb to between $180 billion and $200 billion by the end of next year. This would translate into substantial procurement demand for AI chips, memory components, networking equipment, and other data center hardware.

While Anthropic currently faces challenges including constrained chip supply and slower-than-expected enterprise adoption, Klein emphasized that the rapid acceleration in revenue growth is the core signal investors are focusing on.

"You need to see positive growth rates and financial metrics that demonstrate meaningful acceleration with sustained momentum to maintain bullish sentiment in the semiconductor sector and attract investors who exited after July's selloff to return," Klein said.

SanDisk Investor Day Reshapes Valuation Framework

Beyond these macro catalysts, the industry signals from SanDisk Corp.'s investor day last week are also serving as important evidence for this revaluation cycle.

Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya wrote in a client report that SanDisk's investor day "suggests the industry may be entering a relatively more durable phase," distinct from the historically pronounced boom-and-bust cycles.

Arya pointed out that SanDisk's target of 15% annual sales growth, along with its outlook for gross margins remaining above 80% for the remainder of this decade supported by new customer agreements and supply strategy, provides a valuation reference framework for "how investors should ultimately view memory stocks."

However, Friedman struck a cautious note on chasing the rally. He cautioned that these stocks fell 30% to 40% in July, adding that "stocks that move this violently in both directions tend to keep doing so. Today's rebound, no matter how well-supported by news flow, cannot change the inherently high-volatility nature of the group."
