Sovereign Funds Stay Put, Wall Street Giants Buck the Trend with Heavy Buying

The latest 13F filings reveal a deepening divergence in Bitcoin ETF holdings, as reported by WoofunAI. In the second quarter, two sovereign wealth funds from Abu Dhabi, Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, chose to stand pat, while Wall Street giants aggressively increased their positions during the market downturn.

On the sovereign fund side, Mubadala held on to 14.72 million shares of IBIT, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Council maintained 8.22 million shares, with neither fund making a single trade in the second quarter. Due to the decline in Bitcoin's price, the market value of Mubadala's holdings fell from $566 million to $490 million, while the Abu Dhabi Investment Council's stake dropped from $316 million to $274 million. In the current environment, this silent strategy has ironically become a prudent approach to risk avoidance.

In contrast, Wall Street institutions displayed a strong offensive stance. JPMorgan Chase (JPM.US) increased its spot Bitcoin ETF holdings from 8.46 million shares to 10.62 million shares, a gain of 25.5%. Morgan Stanley (MS.US) boosted its ETF holdings by 3.04 million shares to approximately 16.5 million shares, an increase of 23%. UBS (UBS.US) saw a 13% rise in its general ETF holdings, but more notably, its options activity showed a drastic shift: IBIT call options surged from 80,000 to 1.95 million contracts, while put options decreased from 303,000 to 143,000 contracts. According to WoofunAI's compiled data, although 13F filings only disclose long positions and held options, not including short positions and sold options, UBS's aggressive options adjustment still strongly suggests a bullish sentiment. Even if the net direction cannot be fully determined, this asymmetric position change is a highly significant signal.

Looking at overall market capital flows, the Bitcoin ETF market experienced net outflows of approximately $4.9 billion in the second quarter, with $2 billion of that concentrated in the final trading days of June. Entering August, the first week saw five consecutive days of net inflows, totaling around $850 million. However, that trend reversed last week, with spot Bitcoin ETFs seeing a combined net outflow of $390 million, recording inflows on only one of the five trading days. On the price front, Bitcoin is hovering near $63,000, down nearly 30% from the start of the year and exactly halved from its all-time high last October. This has caused the assets under management for Bitcoin ETFs to fall from over $116.7 billion to approximately $95.5 billion.

The derivatives market presents a similarly complex picture. The value of Bitcoin open interest stands at $47.88 billion. CME leveraged funds hold 5,000 long positions and 12,000 short positions in Bitcoin futures, with short positions more than doubling long positions. However, due to the large volume of arbitrage positions held by ETF investors on the CME, it is difficult to accurately gauge the trend based solely on leverage numbers. Longs are currently in a relatively awkward and passive position.

A policy shift could be the key to breaking the deadlock. This week, Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with the SEC Chairman and CFTC Chairman at the White House, alongside executives from Coinbase (COIN.US), a16z, Kalshi, and Paradigm. The core discussion will revolve around clear regulatory frameworks. With a critical voting period just one month away, the implementation of previously rumored exemption policies and industry rules from the SEC and CFTC will largely depend on the progress of this meeting. Last week's CPI data failed to trigger significant market volatility, suggesting that the marginal impact of macroeconomic data on current market sentiment is diminishing. Smart money is either lying low or opportunistically buying, leaving the market's surface calm while underlying currents are strong. The ETF capital flows this week and the final outcome of the White House meeting will be the key variables determining the next phase of the market's movement.
