Early-ripening "Qinyang" apples sell well before harvest without prior marketing

Qinyang apples, known for their early ripening, are commanding strong market prices even before they are fully harvested, with buyers placing orders before the fruit is even picked from the trees.

At a purchasing point in Shuiyu Village, Yaozhou District, on August 6, village official Li Gongli noted that orders for apples with a diameter of 70 millimeters or more had been secured by merchants before the bags were removed. The price is 4.5 yuan per jin, and the stock is nearly sold out. Nearby, extensive apple orchards in Shuiyu Village are lush with fruit-laden branches, as bright red, plump Qinyang apples weigh them down. Over a dozen workers are busy picking, sorting, and packing these fresh apples into baskets, creating a tempting sight. Farmer Yang Jiantao, holding a freshly picked apple, beams with joy, saying, "This orchard is only in its second year of bearing fruit. Half a mu of land is expected to yield over 6,000 jin, bringing in about 20,000 yuan."

The key selling point of Qinyang apples is their early ripening. They go to market each August, perfectly filling the gap before the late-ripening Fuji variety hits the market in large volumes. This strategic timing results in robust prices during this market window. Li Gongli reports that the area of early-ripening apple cultivation in Shuiyu Village has expanded to nearly 100 mu. "This year, merchants are competing to secure supplies, and the sales cycle is almost over. There's little left for those looking to restock," he adds.

The village's success mirrors a broader transformation in the apple industry of Yaozhou District. In the past, local growers suffered from price crashes due to oversupply during peak seasons. The shift began with a sustained effort to optimize the variety structure. Senior agronomist Dong Jianjun from the Yaozhou District Fruit Industry Center explains that the district has been promoting new combinations like "Qingzhen + Qincui" and "Qingzhen + Ruixue" under the strategy of "new varieties, new technologies, new models" and "changing varieties, density, and soil." Part of the orchards now target the early-season market to avoid overcrowding, while others focus on high-quality late-season varieties, each following a distinct path.

The data highlights the impact: the total orchard area in Yaozhou District, predominantly for apples, has reached 280,000 mu, with early- to mid-season varieties accounting for 70,000 mu. This year's output from these early varieties alone has already exceeded 70,000 tons. From the purchasing point in Shuiyu Village to the district-wide industry landscape, early-ripening apples are becoming a reliable source of income for local farmers. Outside the purchasing point, a truck loaded with freshly harvested apples slowly departs. In two days, these fruits, imbued with the hard work of Yaozhou growers, will appear on supermarket shelves in southern cities.
