Buffett Critiques Current Market: Speculation Dominates, Making Value Discovery Exceptionally Challenging

Warren Buffett has criticized the current stock market for being increasingly dominated by short-term speculative trading rather than long-term value investment logic.

In an interview, he stated: "Everyone is focused on speculative gambling. In this environment, it is extremely difficult to uncover investment targets with real value."

The Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) had already used sharp language about the market earlier this year. In May, he compared today's market to a "church that also has a casino," specifically citing the boom in single-day options trading and bluntly stating that it is essentially gambling.

This year, the major U.S. stock indices have broken through numerous headwinds to reach record highs, with momentum continuing even amidst the ongoing Iran-U.S. conflict and its impact on energy markets. Many market bears believe the artificial intelligence boom has generated a massive influx of speculative capital, with tools like options and leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) further amplifying the speculative atmosphere. A large number of ordinary retail investors have flooded into the stock market, crowding into stocks like memory chip maker Micron Technology and the recently IPO'd space exploration company SpaceX.

The 95-year-old Buffett remains steadfast in his value investing philosophy. The billionaire investor indicated that high-quality, valuable investment opportunities have become increasingly scarce, and capturing them requires patience and strict investment discipline.

The Berkshire Hathaway Chairman said: "There are phases where great opportunities come at you so fast it's unbelievable; but there are other periods where you might go several years before you find one good one, and you're lucky if you do. And the norm should be the latter."

He added: "But human beings are wired for gambling, so it's more profitable to lure people into speculative gambling than to cultivate long-term investors."
