Adobe Unveils AI Assistant for Creative Tasks with Claude Integration

Adobe announced on Wednesday the launch of a new AI assistant designed to help users perform various tasks within its suite of photo, video, and digital content editing software. This assistant will also integrate with Anthropic's Claude AI model.

Core functionality centers on automating workflows across applications. Named the Firefly AI Assistant, it is built on an "agentic AI" design, capable of understanding natural language instructions and automatically utilizing multiple Adobe professional tools to complete tasks.

The working process is as follows: Users describe desired edits in a chat interface, such as "adjust the lighting in this picture," "resize for social media," or "change the color scheme." The AI then determines which tools are needed—such as Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, or Illustrator—and autonomously executes multi-step workflows to finish the editing tasks.

Ely Greenfield, Chief Technology Officer of Adobe's Digital Media business, stated, "There are parts of a project that require pixel-level precision, and we want to continue enabling customers to do that. But there are other parts that users are happy to hand off to an agent or an assistant." Previously previewed under the codename "Project Moonlight" at the Adobe MAX conference in October 2025, the assistant is set to enter public beta in the coming weeks. It can maintain context across sessions, remembering project parameters, brand guidelines, and prior decisions.

Adobe is establishing partnerships with Anthropic and other AI companies, allowing users to access Firefly and Adobe tools through Claude and other "leading third-party AI models." This integration enables creators to conceptualize projects within Claude and then directly invoke Adobe Firefly for execution. Paul Smith, Chief Business Officer at Anthropic, commented, "By partnering with Adobe, we are exploring new ways to help creators brainstorm projects in Claude and then move directly into Adobe Firefly for execution." This marks Claude's first major integration with a creative tool beyond its established programming and enterprise capabilities.

Regarding market positioning and business model, Adobe is attempting to differentiate itself from lower-cost competitors in an era where AI is lowering the barriers to image and video creation. The company emphasizes that its AI tools are commercially safe for enterprise use, backed by an indemnification policy. Adobe has not yet announced pricing for the new assistant but expects it will increase consumption of so-called "AI credits," which are currently the primary method for charging for its AI products. The Firefly AI Assistant also supports Firefly Image Model 5, the latest image generation model now in public beta; Firefly Custom Models, which allow creators to train models on their own image libraries to capture specific visual styles; and Project Graph, a node-based visual system for designing, connecting, and automating AI-driven workflows across Creative Cloud.

This AI announcement coincides with a leadership transition at Adobe. Shantanu Narayen, who served as CEO for 18 years, announced last month that he will step down once a successor is appointed. During this period, investors have expressed skepticism about when Adobe's AI investments will yield returns. Competitive pressures are evident: Canva boasts over 260 million monthly active users, targeting the same small businesses and marketing teams as Adobe Express; Figma holds an 80-90% market share in UI/UX design; and Adobe's stock price has fallen approximately 43%, with investors questioning whether its traditional per-app subscription model can maintain profitability in the AI era.

David Wadhwani, President of Adobe's Digital Media business, said, "Adobe is leading the way into a new era of agentic creativity, where you guide how the work takes shape, and your perspective, voice, and taste become the most powerful creative tools."
