1. Market Overview

5. Opening Summary

The Hang Seng Index eased 0.42% at the opening bell to 24,701 as investors adopted a cautious stance following mixed U.S. cues and lingering macro uncertainties. The HSCEI and HSTECH mirrored the softer tone, down 0.40% and 0.69% respectively, indicating broad-based but orderly profit-taking rather than panic selling.

Large-cap technology counters were generally weak, with Alibaba, Meituan and Tencent all lower by around 1–2%. Lenovo bucked the trend, adding 1.6% after recent strength in PC demand indicators, while JD.com also edged higher. Overall, tech sentiment remains fragile with chipmakers SMIC and Hua Hong Grace extending declines.

Among individual names, auto maker GAC Group surged 8.6%, topping the morning gainers on the back of robust August sales data, while new materials producer Global New Material rose over 7%. On the downside, AI hardware play Z.AI slumped 5.7% after a recent rally, and start-up Minimax continued to unwind post-listing gains with a 5.6% pullback.

Sector rotation was evident: select auto, energy services and biotech names attracted early interest, hinting at bargain-hunting in policy-favoured areas. No major IPOs debuted today, but traders are eyeing upcoming listings in the AI and consumer sectors for fresh catalysts.
