Key Decade Ahead for Carbon Capture and Utilization, Says Hungarian Chemist

During a recent global economic forum in Dalian, Hungarian chemist and academic Csaba Janáky highlighted the significant potential of Carbon Capture and Utilization technology. He suggested the next ten years could be a pivotal period for the industry's growth.

Janáky, a professor at the University of Szeged and co-founder of eChemicles, argued that CCU technology, which transforms captured carbon dioxide into valuable products, holds greater long-term economic promise than Carbon Capture and Storage, which simply sequesters CO2.

Discussing global energy trends, Janáky noted that recent supply chain disruptions and geopolitical shifts have heightened corporate awareness of energy security. He pointed out that resources once taken for granted now underscore the importance of localized production and resilient supply chains.

Using his company's work as an example, he explained they are employing electrochemical processes to convert industrial CO2 emissions into chemical feedstocks. This approach, he stated, allows companies to cut emissions while creating marketable products, delivering both environmental and economic benefits.

On global carbon reduction strategies, Janáky contrasted the two main approaches. He described CCS as essentially a cost center for burying CO2, while positioning CCU as a value-creating pathway that transforms a waste product into new goods.

Commenting on China's green development plans, he praised the inclusion of CCU in long-term strategy as forward-thinking. Utilizing CO2 for industrial production is more sustainable than mere storage, he noted, suggesting China is progressing in the right direction with its industrial policy.

Addressing the shift in market focus from ESG topics to artificial intelligence, Janáky cautioned that the climate challenge persists despite changing headlines. He observed that while sustainability discussions were more prominent a few years ago, the underlying problems have not diminished and are in fact growing more severe.

On AI adoption, he revealed his company began using machine learning to optimize operations six years ago, and AI is now integral to their management. He acknowledged AI as a major driver of industrial change but also warned of its potential impact on certain foundational job roles.

Looking ahead, Janáky views the current era as a major transformative period, akin to the electrification and internet revolutions. He concluded that while major technological shifts bring uncertainty, they also create new opportunities, presenting a promising era for businesses agile enough to adapt.
