Tesla Surges as Q3 Global Deliveries Top Estimates, Europe Registrations Jump 53% in August

Tesla's third-quarter global deliveries exceeded analyst expectations, offering a stabilizing signal for the electric vehicle maker during a period of market pressure, though the figure still declined year over year.

Tesla reported Friday that it delivered 486,532 vehicles globally in the third quarter, above the analyst average estimate of 463,761. New vehicle registrations in Europe showed a notable recovery, while sales in the China market fell on a year-over-year basis.

The delivery data comes as Tesla has endured a difficult stretch of declining sales and weak share performance, with intensifying competition and sluggish U.S. demand continuing to weigh on the company. Meanwhile, CEO Elon Musk is focused on pivoting the company toward cutting-edge businesses such as artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and humanoid robots.

Following the announcement, Tesla shares rose 4.5% in early trading, but remain in negative territory for the year to date. In addition, recent market speculation about a potential merger between Musk's SpaceX and Tesla has driven a periodic rebound in Tesla's stock over the past few weeks.

Year-over-year decline, but beating expectations

In last year's third quarter, Tesla delivered 497,099 vehicles, setting a historical record, as consumers rushed to buy before the expiration of U.S. federal subsidies. This year's third-quarter deliveries were about 2% below that peak but exceeded market expectations by more than 20,000 units.

Even so, Wall Street broadly expects Tesla to achieve modest growth for the full year, reversing the annual sales declines of the previous two consecutive years.

In terms of model mix, the Model Y and Model 3 remain the absolute mainstays of sales. Excluding those two models, the company delivered only 8,295 units of other vehicles combined, including the controversial Cybertruck.

Tesla has already discontinued the higher-priced Model S and Model X, narrowing its consumer-facing lineup to just three models.

Heavy investment underpins future plans

To support business expansion, Tesla plans to spend more than $25 billion this year to increase factory capacity and advance the rollout of its Robotaxi business. The company disclosed in a filing this week that it has secured $30 billion in new loans and credit facilities.

On the new product front, Tesla has begun production of the Cybercab, a Robotaxi model with no steering wheel or pedals, and has launched sales of the Semi electric heavy truck. In addition, the company's long-promised new Roadster sports car is also in the planning stages.

In its energy business, third-quarter energy storage deployments reached 13.7 gigawatt-hours, up from 12.5 gigawatt-hours a year earlier and slightly above the 13.5 gigawatt-hours in this year's second quarter, continuing a trend of modest growth.

Europe recovers, China under pressure

The European market has shown a noteworthy positive signal. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, Tesla's new vehicle registrations in the EU rose about 53% year over year in August, with a cumulative increase of 66% in the first eight months of this year.

Last year, Tesla's EU sales fell sharply amid a consumer boycott triggered by controversy surrounding Musk personally. Currently, soaring oil prices and an influx of Chinese electric vehicles are boosting overall local EV demand, and Tesla is benefiting from this.

By contrast, competitive pressure in the China market remains prominent. Tesla continues to offer end-of-quarter discounts on the Model 3 and Model Y to maintain market share, but production at its Shanghai factory faces challenges.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, of the roughly 86,000 vehicles Tesla produced in China in August, about 36,000 were exported to overseas markets, while domestic deliveries declined on a month-over-month basis.
