Following the Hong Kong SAR government's release of its first five-year development plan on September 16, rating agency S&P stated that banks and insurance companies in the region stand to gain fresh business growth prospects. These opportunities include deeper engagement with the Chinese mainland market, expansion into innovative fields, and the provision of more sophisticated risk solutions.

S&P Global Ratings anticipates that these expanded growth avenues may compel financial institutions to bolster their risk management frameworks. Credit analyst Will Hau at S&P Global Ratings noted that the region's pro-growth and expansionary policy agenda is expected to create openings for banks to finance emerging sectors such as technological innovation, digital financial infrastructure, cross-border trade, and the green transition.

Credit analyst Judy Chen added that stronger integration with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, including planned enhancements to cross-border insurance services and settlement processes, is likely to reinforce the resilience of cross-border insurance operations.
