US Bitcoin Spot ETFs Remain $1B Short of Breakeven as Rising Oil and CPI Data Add Pressure

American-listed bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds are currently stuck in a yearly net flow stalemate, still holding a $1 billion gap to reach breakeven. Although market sentiment has experienced a slight recovery in recent sessions, the accumulated scale of net outflows continues to weigh on overall performance, with this structural imbalance emerging as a key pain point in current institutional capital allocation.

Flow data reveals a sharply volatile pattern in capital movements. August saw $3.52 billion in net inflows, and the current month has added another $770.15 million as participants attempt to repair earlier damage. However, this rebound is struggling to mask the substantial withdrawals seen in May and June, with June alone recording $4.51 billion in outflows that entirely erased the gains accumulated during March and April. This pattern of early strength followed by later weakness highlights institutional investors' ongoing vacillation between short-term arbitrage opportunities and long-term holding strategies.

Macro-level uncertainty is amplifying market volatility risks. Analysts at Bitfinex point to this Thursday's upcoming CPI release and the U.S. Treasury's buyback operations as critical junctures for testing capital stability. If yields remain elevated while buying appetite persists, this would suggest that policy rates are exerting diminishing constraints on bitcoin. Notably, rising energy costs represent a fresh threat: oil prices have climbed 10% this month, with Nymex WTI futures breaking above $94 per barrel to reach a three-month high. The return of such inflationary pressure could quickly trigger risk-off sentiment across global financial markets, potentially offsetting cryptocurrency risk appetite.

Technical signals are also flashing warnings. Ethereum's price has shown signs of momentum exhaustion following a strong rebound, with buyers failing to break through the $2,500 to $2,550 resistance zone. This depletion of buying power typically foreshadows a short-term pullback. Should the price retreat, the 50-day moving average sitting above $2,100 will serve as the primary support level. This represents another liquidity stress test for the market following the macroeconomic data disruptions.
