A research report titled "AI Virtual Cell (AIVC) Technology Trends, Industry Ecosystem, and Application Prospects—Next-Generation Infrastructure for Life Sciences in the AI Era" was released recently, based on a study conducted by a Chinese team from MIT Technology Review.

The report highlights that over the past decade, AI tools like AlphaFold have demonstrated the ability to turn protein structure prediction into a computational problem. However, when applied to real biological systems, clinical translation still faces considerable uncertainty.

AIVC advances research targets from the molecular level to the cellular level, reshaping the methodology of life mechanism studies. It creates a digital counterpart of cells in computational space, allowing cells to be not just objects of experimental observation but also computational systems that can be characterized, simulated, intervened upon, and continuously calibrated.

The report outlines three major trends. First, model competition is shifting from sheer scale expansion toward generalization capability and task-specific adaptation, as simply increasing data volume or parameter counts does not necessarily lead to better zero-shot generalization. Second, proprietary data and newly generated data are becoming critical competitive factors, since public datasets can only support baseline state representation and are insufficient for creating differentiation. Third, the closed loop between dry and wet lab processes is emerging as a key threshold for AIVC industrialization, with the core challenge being the ability to complete the cycle of data production, model prediction, experimental validation, and data feedback.

Notably, the report lists domestic companies such as Baiyao Technology as innovators with AIVC as their core product or primary research engine, placing them alongside international players including Xaira, Recursion, Cellarity, Noetik, and Turbine. The report states that overseas efforts, which started earlier and benefit from more mature collaboration systems, are now entering the phase of pharmaceutical partnerships and industrial validation, while domestic development remains at an early stage but is accelerating the transition from technical research to real-world application.
