Tesla Cybertruck Chief Departs Amid 63% Sales Plunge, Triggering Executive Shakeup

The head of Tesla's Cybertruck project, Siddhant Avasti, announced his departure on Sunday evening.

According to Cox Automotive data, Tesla sold just 5,385 Cybertrucks in Q3 2025, marking a 63% year-over-year collapse. Cumulative deliveries for the first nine months of 2025 totaled 16,097 units, down 38% from 2024 levels. These figures fall far short of CEO Elon Musk's earlier production target of 250,000-500,000 units annually. In response to weak demand, Tesla has recently implemented significant price cuts on inventory models.

Despite the Cybertruck's underperformance, Tesla achieved record overall Q3 deliveries of 497,099 vehicles, primarily driven by U.S. customers rushing to claim the expiring $7,500 federal tax credit before its September 30 deadline. Analysts predict significant sales declines in Q4 following the policy's expiration.

From Intern to Project Leader: An Eight-Year Journey Concludes Avasti stated in a LinkedIn post: "When I joined as an intern eight years ago, I never imagined I'd one day lead the Cybertruck project and bring it to life." Records show he was promoted to engineering manager within two years of becoming a full-time employee in 2018, and was appointed Cybertruck project lead ahead of its 2022 production launch. In July 2024, he additionally took charge of the Model 3 program.

Executive Exodus Continues to Rattle Management Avasti's departure exacerbates Tesla's ongoing leadership turmoil in 2025. Over a dozen executives have left this year, including 15-year veteran Troy Jones (North America VP of Sales), Piero Randolfi (North America After-Sales Director), and Milan Kovac who headed the Optimus humanoid robot project.
