The Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group (CME Group), a leading global derivatives marketplace operator, announced that its new 1-ounce gold futures contract, which trades 24 hours a day, seven days a week, saw nearly 15,000 contracts traded during its first weekend on the market. These transactions represented a notional value of approximately $60 million.

CME Group Inc Global Head of Metals and Managing Director, Jin Hennig, stated that gold serves as a global safe-haven asset, and global events do not take a break on weekends. He noted that the launch demonstrates that retail traders are prepared and have been waiting for a regulated, appropriately-sized product that operates around the clock to manage their gold exposure.

Senior Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Robinhood Derivatives, Adam Hickerson, commented that the new 24/7 gold futures from CME Group Inc allow clients to trade a regulated futures contract at any time of day, any day of the week, from any time zone. This brings immediate, real-time digital trading access to one of the world's oldest stores of value.

CME Group Inc provides the world’s leading benchmark for gold futures. So far this year, the daily average notional value of trading in CME Group Inc gold futures has reached a record high of $125 billion. The exchange launched its 1-ounce gold futures contract in January 2025, and during the first half of 2026, the contract achieved an average daily volume (ADV) of 87,000 contracts.

In the first half of 2026, driven by robust activity in precious metals, CME Group Inc’s metals business set a new record with an average daily volume of 1.3 million contracts, a 55% increase compared to the same period last year. Shares of CME Group Inc have fallen 5.3% year-to-date, but closed Monday slightly higher, up 0.02%.
