The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Tuesday that German automaker Volkswagen AG will conduct two separate recalls, totaling 44,551 ID.4 all-electric vehicles in the US market, both related to potential fire hazards associated with the batteries. The agency indicated that the larger of the two recalls involves 43,881 vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years, where the high-voltage battery poses a risk of overheating, which could subsequently lead to a fire. Volkswagen dealers will perform a free battery software update for the recalled vehicles and, if necessary, replace the battery pack at no cost. Additionally, Volkswagen will recall 670 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 to 2024 model years because some electrode plates within the high-voltage battery cell modules may be misaligned, creating a potential fire risk.
