Beijing Financial Watchdog Alerts Public to Deceptive "Trucking Scheme" Scams in Freight Sector

The Beijing Financial Regulatory Bureau has issued a formal warning to the public, specifically targeting scams in the road freight industry that exploit job-seeking truck drivers. These fraudulent schemes, often referred to as "trucking schemes," involve illegal operators establishing shell logistics companies. They lure victims with false promises of high salaries and stable cargo loads, pressuring them into financing vehicle purchases while charging exorbitant commissions.

Deceptive Recruitment and Contracts

These scammers coerce drivers into signing unequal freight agreements, leading to severe problems such as difficulty securing work, inability to get refunds, and falling into massive debt even when income fails to meet expectations. To protect financial consumers, the bureau has issued a four-point risk advisory for all consumers, including aspiring truck drivers.

First Point: Exercise Caution in Financing

Individuals considering loans or financial leasing to purchase vehicles for freight or logistics work must thoroughly assess the product and their own situation. They should fully understand the credit conditions, total cost of borrowing, and repayment methods. It is critical to realistically evaluate whether actual income can cover the loan repayments. After signing a financing contract, remember that vehicle operation status, cargo availability, or third-party promises are not valid excuses for defaulting on payments.

Second Point: Scrutinize Contracts Before Signing

Consumers must carefully distinguish between loan, lease, and sales contracts. They should read the entire contract, paying close attention to clauses related to fees, such as total financing costs, early repayment penalties, and overdue interest. If any terms are unclear, demand an explanation from the financial institution. Do not hastily sign under pressure or temptation, and never authorize or delegate another person to sign on your behalf. When processing financing online, before completing facial recognition or electronic signatures, carefully read all on-screen prompts to understand the legal consequences. Never perform these actions without proper explanation.

Third Point: Verify Institutional Legitimacy

If financing a vehicle purchase is necessary, always use licensed, compliant financial institutions through official channels. Pay attention to the business scope defined in the institution's financial license. Consumers can verify the license information of banking and insurance institutions through the financial regulatory authority's online license system. If a credit review call is received, the applicant must answer all questions truthfully and not delegate the call to others or provide false information under guidance.

Fourth Point: Pursue Rational Grievance Channels

If you fall victim to a "trucking scheme," seek resolution through official channels. For disputes with financial institutions or reports of regulatory violations, file complaints with the relevant authorities. Do not trust advertisements for "proxy rights protection" or "proxy fee refunds." Never provide personal information to such agencies or individuals, as this can lead to data leaks and financial loss. Also, avoid forging false documents during the complaint process, which could result in legal liability.
