The Direxion Daily MU Bull 2X Shares (MUU), a leveraged exchange-traded fund tracking Micron Technology, recorded a sharp pre-market plunge of 7.44% on Wednesday. The decline extended a significant downturn for the fund and its underlying asset.

The sell-off was triggered by a paradoxical "sell-the-news" market reaction to blockbuster preliminary second-quarter earnings from Samsung Electronics. Despite reporting a staggering year-over-year surge in operating profit, driven by explosive demand for AI memory chips, investors interpreted the stellar results as a signal that the memory chip super-cycle may be nearing a peak, sparking fears of intensifying competition and a future supply-demand imbalance.

Adding significant downward pressure were multiple converging bearish factors. Prominent investor Michael Burry established a short position in Micron, warning the stock's cyclical peak may have surpassed historical bubble levels. Furthermore, unresolved fears over AI computing overcapacity, fueled by reports of Meta Platforms considering selling idle AI compute resources, continued to weigh on sector sentiment. Concurrently, Goldman Sachs reported hedge funds have been net sellers of the semiconductor sector for four consecutive weeks, while Micron Technology executives have cumulatively sold over $124 million in company stock over the past three months, intensifying concerns about overvaluation. The ETF's 2x leverage mechanism has amplified the downward move in Micron's share price.
