Shares of Centene Corporation plummeted 11.16% during Tuesday's intraday trading session, reversing sharp pre-market gains. The dramatic sell-off came despite the company reporting second-quarter financial results that significantly exceeded Wall Street expectations and raising its full-year 2026 outlook.

The downturn was triggered by comments from Centene's CEO during the earnings conference call, who indicated that the company now expects lower year-end membership than its previous outlook for the back half of the year. This warning amplified concerns that were already present in the earnings report, which disclosed a 7.6% year-over-year decline in total at-risk membership to 25.89 million, driven by a significant drop in Commercial Marketplace enrollees and a 5.5% decline in Medicaid membership.

The negative sentiment surrounding the membership outlook completely overshadowed an otherwise stellar quarterly performance. Centene posted adjusted earnings of $2.51 per share, crushing the $1.08 consensus estimate, while revenue surged 10% to $53.58 billion, well above forecasts of $47.62 billion. The company also raised its full-year adjusted earnings guidance floor to more than $4.80 per share and boosted its total revenue outlook range to $193.5 billion to $197.5 billion.
