The latest batch of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice concerning the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein reveals that Katherine Ruemmler, the chief counsel of Goldman Sachs Group, accepted expensive gifts from Epstein before joining the firm. She also provided him with advice on handling media inquiries related to his sex crimes, while Epstein, in turn, counseled Ruemmler on securing senior positions at major corporations like Facebook.

According to a March 3rd report by the Financial Times, Ruemmler's name appears thousands of times in the newly released documents, although some entries are duplicates.

Ruemmler previously served as White House Counsel during the administration of Democratic former President Barack Obama and joined Goldman Sachs in 2020. Citing the documents, Reuters reported on March 3rd that Ruemmler had extensive communications with Epstein between 2014 and July 2019. Epstein had close associations with numerous prominent American and European political and business figures. He was convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor, arrested again in July 2019 on sex trafficking charges, and died in prison in August 2019, with the death officially ruled a suicide. However, a widely circulated theory suggests Epstein was murdered because he possessed a "client list" that could be used for blackmailing well-known individuals.

In 2018, a third party, whose name was redacted by the Justice Department, emailed Ruemmler to say that Epstein wanted to get a watch band for her Apple Watch. Ruemmler replied, "I like the Hermès one. If possible, I'd like the 40mm, stainless steel Hermès..."

In January 2019, she expressed gratitude to Epstein for sending her more gifts, referring to him as "Uncle Jeffrey" in an email. She wrote, "All dressed up by Uncle Jeffrey today! 'Jeffrey brand' boots, handbag, and watch!"

However, a Goldman Sachs spokesperson, Tony Fratto, stated, "Epstein frequently offered gifts and services proactively to his many business acquaintances, which is common in professional services industries."

According to the Financial Times report, between June 2018 and April 2019, while Ruemmler was seeking a senior role at Facebook, Epstein provided her with extensive guidance. Ruemmler reciprocated by "offering advice" to Epstein on how to respond to inquiries from The Washington Post regarding his receipt of preferential judicial treatment, even drafting a detailed written response to the newspaper on his behalf.

While Ruemmler was in discussions with Facebook, she also discussed her job negotiations with Google's parent company, Alphabet, and her eventual role at Goldman Sachs with Epstein. By April 1, 2019, the Facebook negotiations had ended without success. A few days later, Goldman Sachs Group President John Waldron extended an offer to Ruemmler. She joined Goldman Sachs in 2020 as the Global Head of Regulatory Affairs and was promoted to General Counsel the following year.

Ruemmler issued a statement on March 3rd, saying, "My interactions with Jeffrey Epstein were when I was a defense lawyer. I knew him in my capacity as a lawyer, and that was the basis of my relationship with him."

She added, "I had no knowledge of his criminal behavior and was unaware of the monstrous character that was later revealed. These selectively quoted, sensationalized reports about private emails from a decade ago have no connection to my work at Goldman Sachs." She had previously expressed regret for having known Epstein.
