Parents Outraged as Family App Charges Fee to Download Their Own Photos

Parents are questioning why they must pay to download their own photos from a family app.

Multiple parents have reported that the app "Qin Baobao" has implemented a paid membership system without prior notice, moving previously free features like batch photo downloads behind a paywall. This requires users to purchase an annual membership costing 248 yuan to download photos they uploaded years ago, or else download each photo individually.

**Qin Baobao App**

Qin Baobao is a family parenting app that provides a private, shared cloud space for recording a child's growth and offers personalized parenting knowledge services. In January 2024, the app launched a VIP membership service. However, many users state they received no advance notification about this new paid system and only discovered it upon a recent app update.

One parent, a long-term user for nearly a decade, needed to download childhood photos for a school project but was blocked by a prompt requiring a membership for batch export. After subscribing, it took six hours to download over 5,000 photos. Users argue that batch uploading was free, so charging for batch downloads of user-owned content feels unreasonable.

The annual membership is priced at 298 yuan, with a discounted rate of 248 yuan for an auto-renewing subscription. Member privileges include uploading original quality photos, longer video uploads, data backup, and crucially, batch export. Non-members are limited to lower-quality uploads and must download photos one by one.

**Vanishing Member Benefits**

Some users who subscribed report that promised benefits have been removed without warning. One member cited the loss of a monthly free product trial perk. When inquired, customer service stated the trial activity had been discontinued and was no longer part of the membership package, leading to feelings of being misled.

Many consumers express that the membership fee seems high for the limited practical utility it offers, with useful features being primarily batch downloads and high-definition video uploads.

**Hard-to-Find Customer Service**

Both members and non-members criticize the app's customer service access as being deliberately hidden. The primary entry point is located within the membership purchase page, making it difficult for regular users to find. Another access point is within the app's product store, requiring users to click on a product link to initiate a consultation.

From a legal perspective, experts suggest that if a platform changes long-standing free features to paid ones without clear and sufficient notification to existing users, it may impact consumer rights to information and fair trade. Platforms that have created high data migration costs for users have a heightened duty to provide adequate notice before implementing such significant changes to service rules.
