Alibaba Announces Key Leadership Changes in May: CTO Joins Partnership Committee

Two significant leadership changes occurred at Alibaba Group Holding Ltd during May.

The company's Group Chief Technology Officer, Wu Zeming, has been appointed to the Alibaba Partnership Committee, becoming its fifth member.

This committee represents the highest decision-making body within the company.

Separately, the reporting line for Freshippo (Hema) CEO Yan Xiaolei has been adjusted.

She will now report directly to Jiang Fan, who oversees Alibaba's entire commerce segment, rather than to Wu Zeming.

The commerce segment encompasses all of the company's product-related businesses.

This follows an earlier organizational adjustment related to artificial intelligence announced by Alibaba Group CEO Wu Yongming in an internal memo on April 8.

As part of that earlier change, Wu Zeming, the former CEO of the Taobao Deals business, was appointed as the Group CTO.

In this role, he is responsible for the group's business technology platform and AI inference platform development, and serves as the convener of the newly established Alibaba Group Technology Committee.

Lei Yanqun succeeded him as the CEO of Taobao Deals.

Public records show that Wu Zeming joined Taobao in 2004 and is considered a core figure within Alibaba's technical system.

He previously served as the CTO of Alibaba Cloud and was promoted to Group CTO in 2025, concurrently taking charge of the Taobao Deals business.

During his tenure overseeing the business unit, he drove the deep integration of technology and operations, particularly making significant strategic moves in leveraging AI to empower instant retail services.
