ADI Hits Record Quarter as Data Center and Industrial Demand Surge, Q4 Outlook Raised Again

Analog Devices (ADI) posted its fiscal 2026 third-quarter results for the period ending August 1 on Wednesday, with revenue reaching $4.022 billion, a 40% year-over-year jump, and adjusted earnings per share of $3.45, both beating Wall Street expectations. The company attributed the growth to data center and industrial demand, while guiding fourth-quarter revenue to $4.3 billion (plus or minus $100 million), with the midpoint well above the market's prior estimate of approximately $4.1 billion. Shares rose about 2% in pre-market trading. In a week when chip stocks have been under pressure from long-end interest rates and questions over AI capital spending, this report offers another piece of evidence: compute expansion is still transmitting into power management, optical modules, and test equipment.

This is not the rise of a single product line. Industrial revenue now accounts for nearly half of total sales, communications revenue has doubled year over year, automotive has returned to positive growth, and consumer electronics remains a drag. What really needs to be understood is ADI's position in the AI chain — it doesn't sell GPUs, but rather the analog and power chips that let racks handle power, measure accurately, and connect reliably.

Earnings Beat Estimates, Profitability Improves Simultaneously Third-quarter GAAP net income was $1.34 billion, or $2.74 per share, versus $519 million, or $1.04 per share, in the same period last year. Gross margin stood at 67.3%, with operating margin at 40.1%; on an adjusted basis, gross margin was 72.5% and operating margin was 50.0%. Operating cash flow for the quarter was $1.60 billion, representing 40% of revenue; over the trailing twelve months, operating cash flow was $5.55 billion and free cash flow was $4.94 billion, representing 40% and 36% of revenue, respectively.

The company returned $1.69 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including $540 million in dividends and $1.16 billion in buybacks. Over the trailing twelve months, cumulative returns to shareholders reached $5.17 billion.

CEO Vincent Roche stated that revenue, margins, and EPS for the quarter all exceeded the midpoint of guidance, with broad-based demand coverage. CFO Richard Puccio noted that product and regional demand strengthened throughout the quarter, which is reflected in the record fourth-quarter outlook.

Industrial Remains the Foundation, Communications Is the Fastest Growing Segment By end-market breakdown, industrial revenue was $1.972 billion, accounting for 49% of total revenue, up 53% year over year; automotive was $998 million, or 25%, up 16%; communications was $655 million, or 16%, up 84%; and consumer was $397 million, or 10%, up 6%. The official press release attributed the quarter's growth to data center and industrial demand.

The communications segment posted the highest growth rate, consistent with prior management commentary: data centers now account for the majority of communications revenue, contributing to power management and optical module-related products. The upward revision for this quarter has been directly described as "accelerating demand for AI data center hardware and industrial chips." The industrial segment covers automation, aerospace and defense, and test equipment, and remains the company's largest revenue source.

In early July, Analog Devices completed its acquisition of Empower Semiconductor. That company's products target high-density, high-efficiency power delivery, complementing ADI's layout in the "from grid to chip" power chain for AI servers. The deal strengthens the company's product portfolio in data center power, though this quarter's results were primarily driven by existing data center and industrial orders.

Fourth-Quarter Guidance Exceeds Market Expectations The company expects fourth-quarter revenue of $4.3 billion, plus or minus $100 million, with reported operating margin of approximately 42.6% (plus or minus 150 basis points) and adjusted operating margin of approximately 52.0% (plus or minus 100 basis points). Reported EPS midpoint is $3.14, with adjusted EPS midpoint of $3.86, ranging from $3.71 to $4.01. FactSet-compiled analyst estimates were revenue of $4.08 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.54. The guidance midpoint is above Street expectations.

If the midpoint is achieved, fourth-quarter revenue would set another quarterly record. Puccio stated that the company will aim for a strong finish and carry momentum into fiscal 2027 with execution discipline and targeted growth investments.

What These Numbers Mean Amid the Semiconductor Correction The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index saw a rebound in early August, but long-end rates moved higher this week and chip stocks came under renewed pressure. Analog Devices fell with the sector on Tuesday but recovered in pre-market trading after earnings, indicating the market reads the better-than-expected data center and industrial figures as evidence that AI infrastructure demand has not stalled. Compared to memory and GPUs, ADI sells power management, signal chains, and analog front ends — with different unit prices and shipment cadence — but its sensitivity to data center expansion is equally high.

The structural picture needs to be viewed separately. Industrial is approaching half of total revenue, with its high year-over-year growth driven by both cyclical recovery and longer-term demand from automation and test equipment; communications is up 84% year over year, showing greater elasticity but also heavier reliance on sustained capital spending from hyperscale cloud providers. Automotive grew 16% year over year, but its share dropped from 30% to 25% of revenue, indicating the current expansion is not led by automotive. Consumer grew the slowest and has limited overall impact.

The value of this earnings report lies in providing cross-validation beyond GPUs and memory. If data center construction were merely accounting-driven capital expenditure with no substance, orders for power, optical, and industrial test equipment would be unlikely to accelerate to this degree in tandem. Guidance moving up another notch also suggests that, at least through the quarter ending in October, the company is still seeing orders strengthen. The risks are equally clear: the high communications growth rate is highly sensitive to hyperscale customer spending; the industrial surge partly stems from a low base and cyclical recovery, so the slope may flatten; and sector valuations remain suppressed by long-end rates and questions about AI capital returns. For the Philadelphia Semiconductor chain, ADI serves more as a "construction phase" indicator than an "application monetization" indicator. Going forward, it will be necessary to compare with peer earnings and hyperscale cloud providers' capital expenditure guidance to confirm whether this quarter represents broadening demand or a single-quarter pulse.
