Bank of England Governor Bailey Issues Warning, Calls Trump's Attacks on Federal Reserve "Deeply Concerning"

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has warned that U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of the Federal Reserve represents "a dangerous path," marking the British central bank chief's sharpest defense to date of the independence of the world's largest economy's central bank.

Bailey stated on Wednesday that he was "deeply concerned" following Trump's attempt to dismiss Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook, a move that has sparked legal battles that could determine the future of the U.S. central bank. In recent months, Trump has maintained pressure on the Federal Reserve, repeatedly demanding further interest rate cuts as policymakers weigh inflation threats stemming from U.S. tariffs.

Speaking to members of Parliament's Treasury Committee, Bailey said, "The Federal Reserve has built an extremely strong reputation for independence and decision-making, so this is deeply worrying. I think this is an extremely dangerous path."

These remarks represent the strongest criticism to date from the Bank of England Governor, who has typically been cautious in his comments regarding the Trump administration. Last month, he described Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as a friend and "a person of great integrity," but added that he would not comment on U.S. domestic affairs.
