Morgan Stanley Raises MGE Energy Price Target to $77, Citing Renewable Projects as Growth Driver

Morgan Stanley has increased the price target for MGE Energy (MGEE.US) from $73 to $77, concurrently updating its January target prices for the North American regulated and diversified utilities and independent power producer (IPP) sector. Analysts noted in a research report that the utilities sector underperformed the S&P 500 index during the month. Looking ahead to the fourth-quarter earnings season, Morgan Stanley anticipates a more balanced discussion around data center project pipelines, while pointing out growing market concerns over energy affordability and the political landscape. According to financial data, MGE Energy reported full-year 2025 earnings of $135.9 million, equivalent to $3.72 per share, compared with earnings of $120.6 million, or $3.33 per share, in the prior year. For the fourth quarter of 2025, the company earned $23.3 million, or $0.64 per share, versus $22.0 million, or $0.61 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier. The electric utility segment showed significant improvement for the full year. The segment’s 2025 earnings increased by $11.3 million compared to 2024, primarily driven by the commissioning of multiple renewable energy projects. Specifically, the Darien Solar project in Rock and Walworth counties began commercial operation in March 2025, and several months later in June, the Paris Battery Energy Storage System was also connected to the grid. MGE Energy holds 25 megawatts of solar generation capacity in the Darien Solar project and 11 megawatts of storage capacity in the Paris Battery Energy Storage System. The natural gas segment also posted higher earnings. The segment’s 2025 earnings rose by $2.5 million year over year, while retail thermal deliveries of natural gas increased approximately 14% over the same period. The company attributed this growth largely to relatively warmer weather conditions in 2024—milder weather led to a lower baseline in the prior year, which amplified the year-over-year increase in 2025. MGE Energy operates under a public utility holding company model, with its business spanning four core areas: regulated electric utility operations, regulated natural gas utility operations, non-regulated energy operations, and transmission investments and other business segments.
