Prolonged Heatwave and Dry Conditions Impact Crops in Hexi Corridor, Drought Risk Persists

Deep News

Several days of intense heat and sunny weather in Gansu Province's Hexi Corridor are negatively affecting crop irrigation. In Zhangye City, over 1.6 million mu of corn is planted, including roughly 1.1 million mu of seed corn. At a seed corn planting base in Ganzhou District, a reporter observed that crop growth is poor due to a combination of high temperatures, low rainfall, and water scarcity. In some fields, corn husks at the late grain-filling stage have dried up, and the number of kernels per ear is lower than in previous years.

According to the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau on August 11, since mid-July, most parts of Gansu have experienced higher-than-average temperatures. While overall precipitation has been above normal, it has been unevenly distributed geographically. Over the next 30 days, there is a risk of mild drought in the mountainous drylands of Hexi and most areas of Baiyin City. To protect crop growth, agricultural authorities in Zhangye City have implemented measures to address the drought. The city has deployed over 60 municipal-level technical experts to form six drought relief science and technology teams. These teams are working at the county and district level, going directly to the fields to provide technical guidance on drought-resistant management and soil moisture conservation, aiming to mitigate the drought's impact and reduce agricultural losses.
