On March 2, Apple officially introduced the iPhone 17e and an updated version of the iPad Air, continuing its affordable pricing strategy with enhanced performance and marking the start of its annual product release cycle.

In terms of pricing, the iPhone 17e starts at 4,499 yuan, consistent with its predecessor. It features a faster processor, a custom-designed wireless chip, MagSafe magnetic charging capability, and adds a new pink color option. The new iPad Air also maintains its previous price point, with its processor upgraded from the M3 to the M4, delivering an approximate 30% performance improvement. Both products will be available for pre-order starting March 4, with official sales commencing on March 11.

These releases are expected to directly impact Apple's competitive position in emerging markets. The iPhone 17e targets price-sensitive consumers in markets such as India, where it will compete against mid-range models from Samsung and Google's A-series.

The iPhone 17e retains the overall design and 6.1-inch screen of the previous model but incorporates several key internal upgrades. It is equipped with the same A19 chip found in the iPhone 17, its cellular modem is upgraded from the C1 to the C1X, the base storage capacity is doubled to 256GB, and the front glass strength matches that of the iPhone 17.

Compared to standard iPhone models, the 17e maintains certain distinctions: it features only a single 48-megapixel rear camera, does not support high refresh rate displays, lacks the Dynamic Island interface, and has a smaller screen than the 6.3-inch iPhone 17, which starts at $799.

The launch of the iPhone 17e is just the beginning of Apple's product cycle for the year. According to reports, Apple plans to release the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in the autumn, focusing on upgrades to performance and camera systems. Of greater interest is the anticipated debut of Apple's first foldable iPhone, signaling its official entry into the foldable category long dominated by Samsung, and expected to be a major highlight of this year's hardware strategy.

The new iPad Air maintains the external design of its predecessor, with core upgrades focused on internal specifications. The M4 chip provides an overall performance boost of approximately 30%, and the device adds the C1X modem and N1 wireless chip, alongside support for Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.
