IMF Reestablishes Ties with Venezuela After Six-Year Hiatus

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced the resumption of its relationship with Venezuela, following a suspension of over six years due to issues regarding governmental recognition. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that the fund is now engaging with the Venezuelan administration, led by Interim President Delcy Rodríguez. Last month, the IMF indicated that it had initiated renewed contact with Venezuela, starting with the collection of baseline data and an economic assessment of the country after years of disruption. International investors are actively acquiring Venezuelan bonds, anticipating that a change in government could facilitate debt restructuring—a process that typically requires the IMF to introduce a new lending program—along with accompanying data on the nation's sustainable debt levels. The IMF has not released a comprehensive economic evaluation report on Venezuela since 2004.
