South Korean Retail Investors Shift from Crypto to Stocks: SK hynix ETF Trading Volume Surpasses Top Five Crypto Exchanges by 7 Times

According to market data, South Korea's capital market is witnessing a significant capital migration trend. The average daily trading volume of the KODEX SK hynix (SKHY.US) single-stock leveraged ETF has surpassed the combined total trading volume of the country's top five cryptocurrency exchanges by seven times, signaling a structural shift in investor preferences.

This magnitude of difference was particularly evident during the statistical period from July 1 to July 27, 2025. The ETF product, issued by Samsung Asset Management, is designed to track twice the daily price fluctuation of the KRX SK hynix (SKHY.US) index. Its average daily trading volume reached 4.5383 trillion Korean won (approximately $3.3 billion).

Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that during the same period, which covered 18 ETF trading days, the five major exchanges—Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax—had a combined average daily trading volume of only about 650.3 billion Korean won ($473 million), creating a stark contrast.

Understanding the Shift

The underlying reasons lie in the combined pressures of macro-level industrial benefits and a tightening regulatory environment. As a primary supplier of HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), a key component for Nvidia's (NVDA.US) AI accelerators, SK hynix (SKHY.US) has been highly sought after in the global AI boom. Simultaneously, the "Virtual Asset User Protection Act," implemented in July 2024, significantly raised the standards for exchange listings and information disclosure. This, coupled with a prolonged market downturn and scandals, has eroded retail investors' confidence in crypto assets.

In contrast, regulated leveraged ETFs offer an investment channel that combines transparency with the potential for magnified returns. They naturally attract speculative capital seeking a safer haven.

Broader Implications

This phenomenon reveals a fundamental shift in the flow of retail capital within Asia's fourth-largest economy. Funds are systematically moving from high-risk cryptocurrency speculation toward thematic equity products driven by AI and advanced manufacturing. The massive trading volume disparity between the KODEX SK hynix (SKHY.US) leveraged ETF and crypto exchanges is not only a reflection of SK hynix's (SKHY.US) industry standing but also a key barometer for understanding how South Korean retail investors are reallocating their assets under a strict regulatory environment.
