Apple's iMac Could Get OLED Display as LG Display Develops 5-Layer Stack Panel

According to a report from The Elec today, LG Display is developing a 5-layer stacked OLED panel for the next-generation Apple iMac all-in-one computer. Industry insiders reveal that the OLED panel under development by LG Display consists of 3 blue light-emitting layers, 1 red light-emitting layer, and 1 green light-emitting layer, structured in an R-G-B-R-B five-layer stack.

In comparison, LG Display's current high-resolution OLED panels use a B-G-B-R four-layer stack structure, which includes 2 blue light-emitting layers, 1 red light-emitting layer, and 1 green light-emitting layer.

Additionally, LG Display is also developing a 27-inch 5K OLED panel with a four-layer stack structure, achieving a pixel density of 220 PPI and using an RGB Stripe arrangement with RGB sub-pixels laid out side by side. This panel is planned for mass production in 2028. Industry insiders noted, "While LG Display's four-layer stack product can meet Apple's color gamut requirements, it struggles to meet standards in terms of brightness and image retention. To meet the demands of the new iMac, the company is now developing a five-layer stack product."

Apple previously sent a Request for Information (RFI) for iMac OLED development to companies like Samsung Display and LG Display last year, specifying a 24-inch size, a maximum brightness of 600 nits, and a pixel density of around 218 PPI. LG Display's 27-inch OLED panel, with 220 PPI, is relatively close to Apple's requirements. However, this 27-inch product is not intended for direct use in the iMac but primarily for validating RGB Stripe technology and mass production capabilities. Furthermore, Samsung Display and LG Display are targeting the development of OLED panels for the new iMac by 2028, with the final product potentially launching as early as 2029.
