NVIDIA's AI PC Chip Launch Triggers Sharp Declines for Rivals

Jensen Huang's major announcement—NVIDIA's launch of a new AI chip for personal computers—has turned into a negative catalyst for competitors Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.

On the evening of June 1st, in pre-market trading, Intel's stock price fell sharply by approximately 6%. AMD, with a somewhat deeper competitive moat, declined over 3%. Qualcomm saw its stock plummet by nearly 10% at one point.

This follows NVIDIA's release of its first personal computer processor, officially entering a market long dominated by chip giants Intel and AMD, sparking concerns about intensified competition.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang unveiled a new N1X processor developed in collaboration with Microsoft. This processor will be integrated into the new RTX Spark chip and is set to debut this fall in upcoming Windows computers from Microsoft, Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo, and MSI.

Huang stated on stage, "Microsoft and NVIDIA are reinventing the personal computer. This is the first PC product line to be completely redesigned and reinvented in the past 40 years."

This development is widely seen as a significant turning point for the PC industry. For decades, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices have dominated this market with processors based on the x86 architecture.

Anticipation for NVIDIA's Arm-based PC chips has been building for years. The company developed a PC processor years ago as part of Microsoft's efforts to expand the ecosystem for Arm-based chips in Windows computers.

This news also overshadowed Intel's own announcements at the Computex event. Intel introduced its Xeon 6+ central processor, built using its most advanced 18A process technology. Intel claims its flagship 6990E+ model delivers an average 30% improvement in single-thread performance and up to a 30% increase in power efficiency compared to AMD's 192-core Epyc 9965.

Intel also previewed information about Xeon 7, the next-generation Xeon central processor. Codenamed Diamond Rapids, this generation is now officially scheduled for launch in 2027.

On the Stocktwits platform, retail investor sentiment towards Intel remains "bearish," while sentiment for Advanced Micro Devices is "bullish." Traders discussed how NVIDIA's entry into the PC chip market might affect these two companies, though some believe Apple, which designs its own chips, could be one of the losers.

One trader commented, "This is the beginning of the end for Apple," adding that, upon closer inspection, it was only a matter of time. NVIDIA and OpenAI will eventually launch the right devices to completely exclude Apple from the ecosystem.
