EU Plans to Ease Methane Emission Rules to Safeguard Natural Gas Imports

Deep News
04/09

The European Commission is set to relax new methane emission regulations for fossil fuel importers to prevent natural gas imports from being diverted away from the continent, as Europe continues to grapple with high energy prices. The rules, originally scheduled to take effect in January 2027, include strict monitoring and reporting requirements for methane emissions related to flaring and direct releases. The Director-General for Energy at the European Commission stated that the EU is planning to introduce "flexible arrangements" within the relevant regulations. She added that penalties for non-compliance will also be eased to ensure that "no shipments are diverted or delayed due to concerns about penalties."
