First Fed Chair in History to Meet Wealth Pledge Walsh Signs Off on Ethics Compliance

Kevin Walsh, the Federal Reserve Chair, has sold all of the financial assets he previously pledged to divest, completing the conflict-of-interest avoidance arrangement made when he assumed the role. According to U.S. government public records, Walsh signed the ethics agreement compliance certificate submitted to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics last Thursday. The document was publicly posted on the agency's website on Saturday.

It shows that Walsh has fulfilled all asset divestiture requirements stipulated in his ethics agreement, including the remaining investment interests that had not yet been disposed of. Walsh officially took office as Fed Chair in May. Prior to this, he had already submitted an asset divestiture certificate to the Office of Government Ethics, indicating the sale of most of the financial assets he had previously pledged to offload. The latest disclosure means Walsh has further sold off the remaining investment interests covered by the ethics agreement, thereby completing the previously promised divestiture plan.

Senior U.S. government officials are typically required to reduce potential conflicts of interest between their personal financial interests and their public duties through measures such as asset sales, recusal from relevant matters, or other actions. For the Fed Chair, who directly participates in U.S. monetary policy formulation—decisions that can broadly impact stock, bond, and other financial asset prices—personal investments are particularly scrutinized by the market.

Walsh is one of the wealthiest senior officials in Fed history. Previous disclosures show he had promised to sell multiple investment interests, some of which were not publicly disclosed due to confidentiality agreements, hiding the specific composition of the underlying assets. Notably, some of these investments were valued at least $100 million, highlighting the scale of Walsh's personal wealth and the reason for the attention this divestiture arrangement has received. With the latest compliance certificate now public, Walsh has confirmed the sale of all remaining financial assets required by the ethics agreement, completing the asset cleanup related to personal investment conflicts of interest after taking office as Fed Chair.
