Fresh Corn Harvest in Full Swing in Yijun, Shaanxi: Sweet Ears Bring Prosperous Days

On August 25, the fresh corn in Yijun County, Tongchuan City, officially entered its peak harvest and market season. At the fresh corn demonstration base in Sujiayuan, Pengzhen Town, contiguous fields showcased sturdy stalks and plump ears, with harvesting machines shuttling through the farmland while farmers followed closely behind to sort and bag the produce—a bustling autumn harvest scene.

Thanks to a school-local research collaboration mechanism, local farmers introduced a new high-end fresh sweet corn variety, Taiyanghua No. 6, this year. This variety is well-suited to Yijun's climate, featuring a short growth period and flexible crop rotation scheduling. It can be sold directly as fresh produce and is also compatible with deep-processing models such as quick-freezing and vacuum packaging, offering broad potential for industrial chain expansion.

Grower Li Yumin has planted over 150 mu of fresh corn this year, with products already shipped to Xi'an, Weinan, and even Henan Province. "Buyers are currently paying over 0.8 yuan per jin, and each ear weighs about 1.4 to 1.5 jin, so one ear brings in around 1.1 to 1.2 yuan—higher returns than traditional corn, plus a shorter production cycle and quicker returns. After this crop, I'll plant a round of rapeseed to rotate the fields and enrich the soil, making better use of the land. During the harvest period, this also creates jobs for six or seven neighboring households to earn extra income close to home," Li said.

Behind the bountiful harvest lies comprehensive agri-tech support throughout the entire process. The Yijun County agricultural technology department provides full-cycle guidance—from variety selection and field management to green pest control and timely harvesting—while promoting standardized planting practices to firmly safeguard product quality. According to estimates, the demonstration base can produce approximately 3,000 ears of fresh corn per mu.

Meng Yinghua, deputy director of the Yijun County Agricultural Technology Extension Center, stated: "We will continue to provide technical support and advance standardized planting management. At the same time, in response to the practical pressure of expanding the fresh corn market, we will actively build both online and offline sales platforms, promote brand development, and take multiple measures to smooth sales channels—truly boosting the quality and efficiency of the fresh corn industry and driving growers' incomes higher."

Moving forward, Yijun County will continue to strengthen technical guarantees and variety optimization for the fresh corn industry. On the basis of consolidating existing demonstration bases, the county will steadily expand planting areas, proactively connect with nearby buyers to broaden sales channels, and gradually build recognition for local fresh corn. This will make specialty planting a stable income channel for farmers and solidify the industrial foundation for rural revitalization.
