Yangliu Town in Xuanwei City: Distinctive Planting Bears Fruit as Processing Extends the Chain to Boost Incomes

In recent years, Yangliu Town has drawn on its own resource strengths, working on two fronts at once: improving quality through distinctive planting and stretching the value chain through agricultural processing, so that Yangliu's fruit industry can move from the field to the market and inject solid industrial confidence into rural revitalization.

Walking into the kiwifruit planting base in Huangnidi Village, Keji Village, Yangliu Town, plump green-fleshed kiwifruits hang from row upon row of vines. Keji Village's altitude and sunlight conditions suit kiwifruit cultivation, and the base uses open-air ecological planting, producing kiwifruit with tender flesh and a balanced sweet-and-sour taste that is well received by the market. Kong Weijie, Party branch secretary of Keji Village in Yangliu Town, said: "The weather has been quite good this year, and both the fruit set rate and quality of the kiwifruit are stable. The base mainly grows green-fleshed kiwifruit, which has tender flesh and good taste. Since they began ripening in September, nearby visitors have kept coming to buy them. This year the 15 mu have yielded about 5 tonnes, worth around 60,000 yuan. In management we insist on green cultivation, manual weeding, and letting the fruit ripen naturally without forcing ripening. Next we will extend further into picking experiences and production-sales connections, combining base picking with rural tourism so that more people come to pick fruit in the fields and take products away."

In the past, Keji Village had high mountains, steep slopes and scattered plots, and traditional crops brought low returns. In recent years, Keji Village has drawn on its own ecological advantages and adjusted its planting structure to local conditions, not only steadily developing the kiwifruit industry, but also, relying on natural conditions such as ample sunlight and high selenium content in the soil, introducing apples, cherries, tomatoes and other distinctive fruits and vegetables, so that the once-remote mountain nook has gradually borne golden fruit.

As kiwifruit ripens in Keji Village, the pumpkin processing plant in Kedu Village is also bustling with activity. Workers quickly and precisely peel, seed, cut and box chestnut pumpkins, with every step orderly. These pumpkins are transported from Lefeng Township, and after completing preliminary processing in Yangliu, they are sent back to Lefeng, where Yunnan Nenya Agricultural Technology Development Co., Ltd. carries out deep processing and packaging, with the final products sold to markets in various places. This collaborative model of "Lefeng supplies raw materials + Yangliu does preliminary processing + Lefeng does fine processing and sales" allows Yangliu Town's processing capacity to be fully used, and local people gain stable wage income at their doorstep. Gu Xuemei, head of the Yidao agricultural products processing point in Yangliu Town, said: "Our factory officially began production in March this year, and operations are now generally stable. The factory normally has seventy or eighty workers, giving nearby residents opportunities for local employment. Everyone earns a monthly wage of 2,000 to 4,000 yuan, helping people increase incomes at their doorstep. We and the Lefeng fine-processing factory are closely linked upstream and downstream: we handle preliminary processing of pumpkins, and after processing they are sent in a unified way to the Lefeng fine-processing factory for deep processing. This also avoids the unsold inventory problems that could arise if we planted pumpkins ourselves."

Through the division of labor between preliminary processing and fine processing, the industrial chain of field-level preliminary processing and factory-level fine processing has been improved, effectively raising the added value of pumpkin products. Today, as the industrial layout keeps improving, Yangliu Town's industrial map is extending from a single planting segment toward processing and value-added segments, giving industrial development more confidence and momentum. Li Juncai, director of the Yangliu Town Agricultural Technology Service Center, said: "In recent years Yangliu Town has consistently treated agriculture as a top priority in industrial revitalization. On one hand, based on ecological and climate advantages, it has continued to strengthen distinctive planting, and specialty agriculture such as kiwifruit, tomatoes, strawberries and dried pickled vegetables has formed a certain scale and reputation. On the other hand, it is actively filling shortcomings in processing and, relying on existing carriers such as vegetable processing and employment assistance workshops, taking on preliminary processing business for agricultural products from surrounding townships, keeping the value-added benefits of processing in Yangliu. Next, Yangliu Town will continue to focus on the model of distinctive industries plus industrial chain extension, improve planting quality, perfect supporting facilities, and keep expanding agricultural product markets, promoting the shift from selling raw materials to selling products."

From the fruit and vegetable bases in Keji Village to the processing workshops in Kedu Village, Yangliu Town works on two fronts at once: distinctive planting, turning ecological resource endowments into planting advantages for agricultural products; and processing value addition, keeping the benefits of preliminary processing locally. By making joint efforts on both the planting and processing ends, it forms a synergy between growing well and selling well, pushing distinctive industries from the field to the market, injecting solid industrial momentum into rural revitalization, and truly achieving higher agricultural efficiency and higher farmer incomes.
