General Motors and LG Energy Solution's joint venture battery company will have a small number of employees return to a shuttered electric vehicle battery plant in Ohio this month, but plans to recall hundreds of laid-off workers from the facility remain uncertain. Due to weak electric vehicle demand, General Motors and its plant partner, South Korea's LG Energy Solution, decided in January to idle the factory for six months. This meant approximately 850 employees were expected to return to work around June. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the joint venture, Ultium Cells, declined to confirm a specific timeline for the full resumption of operations at the Warren, Ohio plant. Ultium stated that a "small number" of employees will return during the week of May 25th to work on tasks "related to resuming operations later this year," adding that the specific timing for restarting production will depend on market demand for electric vehicles.
