Gansu Apples Step Out of Obscurity with Global Reach

While Shandong's Yantai, Shaanxi's Luochuan, and Xinjiang's Aksu apples are widely recognized, Gansu apples are now making their mark globally, thanks to their premium quality and comprehensive supply chain. According to Lanzhou Customs data, Gansu exported fresh apples worth 430 million yuan in the first 10 months of this year, reaching 14 countries and regions, while concentrated apple juice exports hit 390 million yuan, covering 18 markets.

**Golden Growing Regions Yield Premium Fruit** Gansu’s apple-growing regions, particularly Pingliang, Tianshui, Qingyang, and Longnan in the southeast, benefit from moderate altitude, abundant sunlight, significant day-night temperature variations, and fertile loess soil—ideal conditions for apple cultivation. The apples produced here are visually appealing, crisp, sweet, and nutrient-rich.

Other key production areas include Yongjing County in Linxia Prefecture along the Yellow River, where early-ripening varieties enable off-season sales, and Baiyin’s "Pingchuan Apple," a nationally recognized geographical indication product. Among Gansu’s most famous varieties are Tianshui’s Huaniu and Jingning apples, the latter promoted with the slogan: "After tasting apples worldwide, you’ll still crave Jingning apples."

Zhao Mancang, a 58-year-old orchardist in Yuwan Township, harvested 18 tons from 230 trees this year, selling all at 5.7 yuan per jin.

**Technology and Supply Chain Expansion** Automated sorting lines, like those at Gansu Demei Diyuan Modern Agricultural Group’s logistics center, use vision systems for color grading, X-ray technology for sugar and defect detection, and weight-based sorting, processing up to 75 tons daily during peak season.

Purchaser Chen Hailong, sourcing Jingning apples for Wuhan markets, praised their appearance, taste, and durability. Meanwhile, Tianshui Yitian Fruit’s automated lines and disease-screening tech ensure only top-grade apples leave the facility.

Gansu’s apple industry has evolved beyond fresh fruit and juice into dried slices, distilled spirits, and high-value products like apple enzyme cosmetics. Companies like Leguoyuan in Jingchuan County process 12,000 tons annually into dried apples, while Tianshui’s Great Wall Juice converts fruit into concentrate, essence, and feed.

**Heritage and Innovation Drive the "Gan Flavor" Brand** Orchardist Man Hualong of Qingyang’s Huan County transitioned from traditional farming to adopting advanced techniques and diversifying varieties, including Red and Golden Delicious, Fuji, and Ruixue.

Longnan’s Lixian County has a storied apple history, with its Red Delicious apples entering Hong Kong markets decades ago. Local leaders like Shi Jianrong, head of Xingjia Fruit Cooperative, have expanded cold storage and training programs, quadrupling orchard acreage in Yongxing Town.

E-commerce is thriving, with entrepreneur Zhou Lingling’s cooperative leveraging live-streaming and pre-order models. The provincial "Gan Flavor" brand unites Gansu’s apple growers, enhancing competitiveness in domestic and international markets—favored in Southeast Asia for fresh consumption and in Europe and the U.S. as juice concentrate.
