Iranian Missile Strike Hits US Base in Jordan After American Forces Sink Five Tankers

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday that it launched ballistic missiles at a US military base in Azraq, Jordan, in retaliation for an American attack on Iranian oil tankers. The strike comes amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Jordan’s armed forces said in a statement early Monday that the country had come under missile fire from Iran over the preceding hours. Air defense systems intercepted 20 ballistic missiles aimed at Jordanian territory, successfully destroying 18 of them, while two others landed in open areas far from populated regions. The military confirmed that monitoring, tracking, and assessment operations remain ongoing, and that all response procedures were carried out to safeguard national airspace and civilian lives.

The US Central Command had previously reported that American forces “destroyed” five IRGC oil tankers on Sunday. According to the statement, the IRGC had twice fired ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship in the preceding two days, but the vessel “successfully evaded the attack and continued patrolling regional waters with no US casualties.”

In response to what it described as Iran’s latest failed assault, the US military struck the IRGC’s crude carriers “Kaviz,” “Chaminal,” “Horizon 1,” and “Lesko” in the Gulf of Oman, and the “Darya” near Kharg Island. Crews were warned to abandon ship before the strikes, which left the vessels inoperable.

Meanwhile, US Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins addressed Iran’s claim of capturing an American unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a “malfunctioning device” that had failed more than a day earlier. Hawkins stated that the vehicle was on a reconnaissance mission in the area to support US operations, but described it as “an older model that did not collect sensitive data or carry classified sonar or radar equipment.”

The IRGC had announced earlier that it seized the drone at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as one of the “US military’s most modern and intelligent unmanned submarines,” delivered in 2025. Revolutionary Guard statements said the captured equipment is a large autonomous underwater vehicle measuring roughly 5.8 meters in length and weighing nearly 3 tons, capable of operating underwater for up to 10 days at depths reaching 6,000 meters. The device can be used for underwater reconnaissance, seabed mapping, mine detection, and anti-submarine support operations.

In a separate development, the US Treasury Department on Monday added 27 Iranian airlines and other companies to its “Specially Designated Nationals” list for sanctions. The move follows Washington’s earlier sanctions on Iran’s Mahan Air in 2011, meaning all Iranian airlines now face US penalties. The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control also blacklisted four companies in Turkey, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan for providing cargo services and sales agency support to Mahan Air’s operations and procurement networks. Additionally, three aviation-related authorizations involving Iran, including flights over Iranian airspace, were suspended.

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued an advisory requiring financial institutions to report procurement networks supporting Iran’s aviation sector. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had announced on August 24 a new round of sanctions expanding restrictions to five areas: aviation, digital assets, gold, shipping, and technology.

In other news, a commander of the Basij militia (“Mobilization of the Oppressed”) was killed in a terrorist attack in southeastern Iran on Sunday, according to the Tasnim News Agency. Abdulraouf Eshaghi, the Basij commander for the Parud region in Sistan-Baluchestan province, was “martyred” in the attack. Iranian security forces are pursuing the perpetrators, though no further details about the attackers were provided.
