European authorities are planning to introduce stringent new standards for cloud computing services in highly critical national-level tender projects.

This move could potentially exclude major US technology firms such as

Amazon

,

Microsoft

, and

Alphabet

from participating in these significant initiatives.

The proposal forms part of the European Commission's broader Cloud and Artificial Intelligence Development Act.

EU technology affairs chief Henna Virkkunen is scheduled to formally announce the legislation on Wednesday as one component of a package of measures designed to reduce Europe's dependence on American technology.

The proposed standards may undergo revisions at a later stage.

The proposal also introduces mandatory non-price award criteria, including a requirement that relevant software and hardware must be developed within the European Union.

The European Commission declined to comment on the specifics of its plan but stated to media that this package of measures concerning technological sovereignty is "crucial for enhancing Europe's own technological capabilities and for safeguarding European competitiveness and security."
