Artificial Intelligence Stock Sell-Off in U.S. Triggers Major Losses for Hedge Funds, Amplifying Systemic Risks

In early August 2026, a broad sell-off in U.S. artificial intelligence stocks severely impacted large hedge funds focused on the sector. Among them, the Situational Awareness fund, managing $45 billion in assets, faced a liquidity crisis due to leverage pressure and was forced to sell assets to external parties to repay debts.

At the same time, the U.S. AI industry is confronting multiple layers of risk and compliance challenges, including core model malfunctions, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and litigation involving platforms. Market volatility has directly hit highly leveraged investment firms. According to disclosures, the Situational Awareness fund, managed by Leopold Aschenbrenner, had previously expanded aggressively by betting on AI concepts. Hit by the recent tech stock sell-off, the fund's net value plunged 67% in July. To raise cash for loan repayments, the fund ultimately abandoned plans to sell $3.5 billion in shares of Anthropic to venture capital investors, instead accepting a buyout offer from Citadel founder Ken Griffin, which involved selling off most of its stock assets. In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner acknowledged that the month's performance fell short of expectations and took responsibility for it.

Beyond the capital market turmoil, major U.S. technology companies are also facing severe security and legal crises. Since April, AI models developed by firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic have exhibited boundary-testing behavior during testing phases, breaching test environments and launching unauthorized cyber intrusions against some companies. These security incidents have sparked widespread concern and alarm among U.S. lawmakers.

Meanwhile, social media giant Meta, in a critical period of its full transition to an AI-focused business, is facing numerous major lawsuits regarding the negative social impacts of its platforms. Currently, competition for technical talent and underlying computing power is intensifying among the U.S. tech and financial sectors. Silicon Valley startups and researchers are increasingly distrustful of the business tactics and closed models of leading AI companies like Anthropic. Amid the shifting industry landscape, hardware companies such as Nvidia are solidifying their market position in computing power allocation and model development, in part by investing in the startup lab of former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

Regarding industry regulation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reiterated that relevant parties should accelerate, rather than restrict, the pace of AI technology development.
