Tarim Oilfield Surpasses 400 Billion Cubic Meters in West-East Gas Pipeline Supply

The Tarim Oilfield, a primary source for China's West-East Gas Pipeline project, has now supplied over 400 billion cubic meters of natural gas into the pipeline network, securing energy for the daily lives and production needs of nearly 500 million people in downstream regions.

Known as the "First Source of the West-East Gas Transmission," the Kela 2 gas field has maintained steady and increasing production. The broader Kela-Keshen trillion-cubic-meter gas zone, to which it belongs, has seen its proven natural gas geological reserves surpass 1 trillion cubic meters following the commissioning of a series of new ultra-deep wells.

Zhang Long, Party Branch Secretary of the Kela Processing Station at PetroChina Tarim Oilfield, stated that over the 22 years since its development, the Kela 2 gas field has supplied more than 150 billion cubic meters of gas to the West-East Pipeline, establishing an efficient development model.

While gas source capacity continues to expand, the transmission and distribution hub capabilities have been upgraded simultaneously. To further enhance the gas supply security of the entire pipeline network, Tarim Oilfield has carried out three rounds of expansion at the West-East Pipeline First Station—the core hub connecting various gas sources to the main pipeline network—achieving a leap in transmission capacity.

Zou Tao, Station Master of the West-East Pipeline First Station at the Oil & Gas Transportation and Marketing Division of PetroChina Tarim Oilfield, noted that the station now supplies 50 million cubic meters of natural gas downstream daily. Through the three expansions, its supply capacity has progressively increased from 12 billion cubic meters to the current 40 billion cubic meters annually.

The Tarim Basin, where the Tarim Oilfield is located, is China's largest onshore oil and gas-bearing basin, rich in natural gas resources. In recent years, the oilfield's natural gas exploration and development have advanced into ultra-deep formations, leading to the discovery of two trillion-cubic-meter gas zones: Kela-Keshen and Bozi-Dabei. It has sustained an annual gas output exceeding 31 billion cubic meters for six consecutive years, maintaining efficient and stable production.

Currently, over 2 million cubic meters of natural gas from the Tarim Oilfield reaches eastern regions of China, including the Yangtze River Delta, every hour.
