Anaergia's Southern California Biogas Plant Commences Delivery of Renewable Natural Gas to Southwest Gas

Anaergia Inc. has announced that its Southern California biomethane facility has officially begun delivering renewable natural gas into the distribution system of Southwest Gas.

This marks the first renewable natural gas production facility under California's BioMAT program to begin supplying gas to a utility.

The project received conditional approval from the California Public Utilities Commission on March 19, 2026, and commenced deliveries after meeting stipulated conditions.

The facility is located at the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority site, where it uses co-digestion of municipal wastewater solids and organic waste sourced from Southern California to produce biogas, which is then upgraded to pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.

It is reported that the plant can process up to 104,000 tons of organic waste annually and has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 31,710 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, equating to the annual emissions of about 7,400 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.

Additionally, the project has created employment opportunities for local communities including Victorville, Apple Valley, and Hesperia.

The facility's renewable natural gas output is underwritten by Southwest Gas, with commercial partner Anew Climate responsible for the gas's marketing, carbon intensity compliance, and logistics.

Anaergia's Chief Executive Officer, Assaf Onn, stated that as the first facility to deliver renewable natural gas under California's BioMAT program, this project demonstrates that organic waste can be converted into a reliable renewable fuel source at scale.

This collaboration is also a significant step in implementing California's Senate Bill 1440.

This legislation mandates that the state's investor-owned utilities procure renewable natural gas derived from diverted organic waste from landfills, with a statewide target of approximately 55 facilities of similar capacity by 2035.

Southwest Gas President and Chief Executive Officer, Justin Brown, noted that such projects showcase practical solutions that deliver environmental benefits to communities while supporting customer energy needs.

Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority General Manager, Darron Poulsen, added that Senate Bill 1440 provides a crucial framework accelerating projects that reduce methane emissions, support grid reliability, and strengthen local communities.

Anaergia, headquartered in Ontario, Canada, is a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol TSX: ANRG, and specializes in converting organic waste into sustainable resources such as renewable natural gas, fertilizer, and water.
