Standard Chartered Secures Exclusive Bank Distribution Role for HKDAP, Bridging Stablecoins and Mainstream Finance

Standard Chartered Bank has been officially designated as the first bank distributor for HKDAP, a significant move that opens the first direct pathway for the stablecoin into the mainstream commercial banking system. While cryptocurrency exchanges HashKey and OSL had previously been the initial distributors of the token, the involvement of Standard Chartered fills a critical gap between public blockchains and corporate balance sheets by integrating HKDAP into existing corporate banking services, thereby resolving the usage barriers stemming from traditional compliance frameworks and independent liquidity management.

Anchorpoint, the Hong Kong subsidiary of Standard Chartered, plays a central role in this process. Its shareholder structure includes Standard Chartered, HKT, and安拟集团, with Standard Chartered and its joint venture partners serving as the largest shareholders. This deep integration not only reinforces Standard Chartered's dominant position in the HKDAP ecosystem but also signifies the removal of end-to-end fiat conversion obstacles. However, it also concentrates early-stage operational risks within the same banking group, an exposure that is being closely monitored by the institutional risk committee across four key dimensions.

From the perspective of business integration logic, Standard Chartered does not view HKDAP as an isolated project but rather embeds it within a broader digital asset infrastructure blueprint. Notably, the bank established a USDC issuance and redemption platform through its Dubai DIFC branch in July, and is now further expanding its service network to support multiple currencies across multiple jurisdictions. According to data compiled by Woofun AI, while USDC primarily serves global dollar liquidity needs, HKDAP, backed by Hong Kong's increasingly mature legal framework, offers a regulated local settlement instrument. The two complement rather than compete with each other in banking services, compliance assurance, and fiat conversion functions.

This differentiated positioning enables corporate treasurers to clearly distinguish between emerging digital deposit products and regulated stablecoins based on Ethereum, thereby obtaining the efficiency of on-chain assets while retaining the trust endorsement of traditional banking. Through this dual-track strategy, Standard Chartered aims to gradually introduce the immediacy and transparency of blockchain technology while maintaining the stability of traditional finance, offering institutional clients a seamless experience in fiat-to-stablecoin conversion.

In specific application scenario planning, Standard Chartered's Q4 roadmap focuses on addressing the settlement time-lag pain point in money market funds. Currently, while ownership information of digital fund units can be updated on-chain within seconds, cash transfers remain constrained by conventional remittance cut-off times and traditional clearing processes, resulting in capital inefficiency. HKDAP is designed as a 24/7 cash transfer channel, allowing institutional investors to obtain tokens through Standard Chartered, complete on-chain subscriptions immediately, and receive redemption proceeds directly in HKDAP form, thus enabling true real-time, after-hours fund settlement.

Furthermore, the bank plans to utilize HKDAP for liquidity transfers across its global branch network and to pilot round-the-clock cross-border trade settlement. These initiatives aim to break the constraints of traditional banking hours and enhance global capital flow efficiency. Particularly in cross-border trade scenarios, HKDAP is expected to serve as a vital bridge connecting liquidity across different jurisdictions, further solidifying Standard Chartered's competitive edge in the global digital financial infrastructure.

Despite the strong banking backing, HKDAP remains in its early developmental stage, and its market acceptance is yet to be proven. As of August 19, the circulating supply of HKDAP stands at approximately 522,000 tokens, with total trading volume around 658,160 US dollars, backed by reserves of 1.62 million Hong Kong dollars. While the relevant infrastructure has been officially launched, whether it will achieve widespread commercial adoption remains uncertain. After the product becomes fully accessible to the public by the end of 2026, key validation metrics will include the depth of collaboration with various asset management institutions, actual subscription scale, conversion cost differentials, and third-party reserve certification results. These metrics will directly reflect HKDAP's practical value and compliance maturity in real-world business environments, determining whether it can progress from proof-of-concept to scaled application, and consequently reshape the competitive landscape of the global stablecoin market.
