EasyMarkets Discusses Custody Debates Driving Capital Shifts

On August 7, following the hardware wallet security incident, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products saw consecutive capital inflows, prompting market discussions on whether some holders were shifting toward regulated channels.

Although causality remains unproven, EasyMarkets noted that both changes at least reflect renewed attention on custody methods. While trading products offer convenient trading and institutional custody, self-custody emphasizes asset control, with different operational costs and risk profiles between the two.

Comparing recent flow and price movements, EasyMarkets suggested that fees, liquidity, and market sentiment also influence channel selection. The security incident may increase investor focus on backups, signatures, and device sources, and could also accelerate service providers' audit and remediation efforts.

If the capital migration is merely short-term risk aversion, subsequent inflows will likely cool down quickly. However, if demand structures change, it could manifest as prolonged consecutive data. Next, it is necessary to observe whether incident investigations, product subscriptions, and on-chain transfers corroborate one another, rather than drawing conclusions based solely on temporal coincidence.

As more data accumulates, EasyMarkets analysis indicates that the market can only then determine whether custody preferences have undergone a genuine and lasting shift.
